Bettas are tropical and should be kept in heated tanks. Water temperature must be monitored using a submersible thermometer (thermometers that stick about the side of the tank are certainly not accurate enough).
It is also a good idea to age your water a minimum of 24 hours. This allows dissolved nitrogen to outgas. When you add water from your tap straight to an aquarium, you will observe tiny air bubbles forming on my way through the betta fish tank.
In tanks having a current, they're less likely so that you can blow bubblenests, as the present will break up the nest when they try to make one.
Filtering and Aeration: Because bettas are anabantoids, or labyrinth breathers, filtration and aeration usually are not required, as they may be for most fish. Bettas originate from stagnant, warm water in the wild, and possess adapted to consider oxygen from the atmosphere at the surface in the water. This is why bettas can survive such small tanks without filters.
Aging the river will also allow chlorine to evaporate. However, chloramine and heavy metals will not evaporate, so you should still treat your water having a dechlorinator/conditioner.
A high pH or hard water will result in fins to curl, specially in crowntails, which are particularly sensitive to inappropriate water parameters. Indian almond leaf (IAL) or blackwater extract (BWE) might help lower the pH naturally.
